Spacious accommodation in an ideal location
This is a really spacious 5 bedroom accommodation with everything you could possibly ask for.
The really exceptional quality is just how close it is to all the restaurants and harbour and how easy it is to get from the accommodation to any part of the island.
Initially, it is somewhat disconcerting when you first draw up to the front gate. As the location of the property is in a residential area. However, once you go up the stairs and open the door; you are greeted with a wonderful large open hallway. 3 bedrooms lead off this hallway - including the master bedroom which adjoins the front bedroom. This is great for a family. The front room is a single but a camp bed was kindly added to make it perfect for two children.
The overall decor of the house feels somewhat dated and it is not as luxurious as many places I have stayed at. But it is extremely homely and comforting. The kitchen is well equipped with Miele appliances and plenty of cutlery and crockery. There is also a microwave which many villas do not have. We didn't really use the kitchen to its full capacity as we ate out mostly.
Some of the previous reviews mentioned about electricity; we have not had an updated bill yet so can not be certain if this will be a hit. However, we went when the temperature was really high so we had to use the air-con in bursts and the fans to keep cool at night.
The pool is great. Although, we were surprised it did not have a shallow end. Seemed to be mostly one depth of about 5ft all the way. That being said, the steps down was a great place for non swimmer kids. My only concern was the rather high last step to get into the pool.
Finally, a BBQ area exists but it is not great. I am guessing this is the style of the area. However, if you want to cook great meat and fish - you need to be able to have cooler and hotter areas or be able to raise or lower the 'grill'. Overall this was basic but adequate and would seriously benefit from some lighting around it as we were cooking quite late.
The other slight niggle was that you can not access the downstairs without going out of the patio doors from the upstairs living room. Felt a bit weird but no doubt my teenage children liked the independence. Also, we were three families each of whom had hired a car. We were not 100% confident about leaving the cars at the front as the road was narrow and the locals do drive quite speedily!
However, overall, a delightful villa in a wonderful location.
The house was a little difficult to find but when we arrived were very pleased. The house was just as described with a lovely pool. The house was clean and the arrival staff very helpful. The only downsize was due to the cost of electricity, we had to limit use of aircon .The house had everything we needed and more.
Beautifully restored property in the old Turkish quarter of Kyrenia
The property has been sympathetically restored and extended. The house is spacious and bright with everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay. There is even the use of a Turkish cell phone. There is a beautiful pool with a lovely garden full of lime ,orange and grapefruit trees at the back. The main house has 2 large double bedrooms plus another bedroom leading off from the main bedroom which is ideal, for small children to be close to their parents.
Underneath the main house there is another self contained flat with a further two double bedrooms, which was ideal for teenagers or another family.
When we arrived we had an issue with the cleaning of the sitting and kitchen floors and there was a lot of old cobwebs on the fixtures, fittings and furniture in the sitting room. Our rep Laura was very responsiive and sent in a cleaner the next day who did a thorough job of the cleaning and we were very happy. The beds are very comfortable and there are also ceiling fans to keep you cool , which we found very effective and we did not need to use the air conditioning, which was a bonus. There is excellent WiFi connection however there is not a TV in the main house so bring an iPad and games if you need to keep young children entertained, we had a couple of rainy days. The TV in the flat below is not connected to an Ariel so you can only play DVDs, the Tv is also old With no HDMI port to connect a fire stick to get TV shows to keep teenagers entertained on a rainy day, having said that we were out and about most of the time and there are lots of little restaurants and butchers and bakers close by. We also made use of the of the BBQ by the pool. There is a washing machine which was very useful, with small children, however the iron leaks and does not get hot enough to press anything that is linen.
Another thing in `Cyprus you have to keep the work surfaces and floors spotlessly clean of food otherwise you will be invaded by small ants. So every food item has to be kept in the large fridge. My advice would be to bring some ant repellent. There was also no washing up liquid when we arrived so after a long flight we had to run out and get these essential items.
All these little niggles aside . Nothing in life is perfect we throughly enjoyed our stay and we would definelty come and stay in the Merchants house again.
Thankyou for your response.
Nice to see that you had a great holiday.
We don't leave washing up liquid as its a self catering Villa with a dishwasher that we leave some tablets for you to use to start you off and a welcome pack which you chose to have delivered to the villa.
Yes ants are an issue in all villas and homes out here and Ant powder is readily available in all supermarkets..
We have no record of a report of a leaky iron of course this will be replaced by the owner.
Again thankyou for your response
A wonderful large villa with plenty of room for everyone.
Magnificent old Merchants house in the heart of Kyrenia. The pool and Garden are a tranquil Oasis amid the bustle of a busy residential and tourist town.
A very beautiful hidden gem
This villa worked very well for us as 2 families staying, as the downstairs is a self contained flat so each had their own space if needed. The pool and garden area is lovely, although I was disappointed at the secret garden through the doors in the pictures actually being a mirror! Although the garden itself is large enough anyway with plenty of seating and lovely beautiful flowers and fig trees.
We had a great stay and walks down to the Harbour area or to Peanuts restaurant in the evenings when the heat had cooled off were lovely. For a day out with children we visited Elexus Resort as day visitors to use the pools and water slides with a buffet lunch, about £10 each way in a taxi and a lovely day out (great value at cost of around 900TL for a family of 10, but we bartered and didn't pay for the littlest kids!)
A very well appointed villa, hidden in a backstreet near to Kyrenia centre, we didn't visit any of the ex-pat type bars as theres plenty of nicer places by the harbour, or a hidden gem is the restaurant at Avenue Hotel Kyrenia which has a beautiful restaurant hidden in a courtyard a max 10 minute walk from the villa. Very friendly with children, lovely staff, food & cocktails.
Slight annoyance that we only discovered on arrival that the villa electricity is metered therefore be very conscious of this with the air-con use. Although we were pretty careful as we worried about a huge bill, but could in hindsight have used much more as it was only £20 after 10 days, but still would be nice to know beforehand, therefore i'm adding this to my review.
Overall it was a fabulous stay and a very well appointed villa with everything we needed, and help at hand from Laura and the team if needed.
Romantic, blissful, peaceful, beautiful hideaway
I don’t know where to start to describe The Merchants House.
The photos really don’t do the house justice since you couldn’t possibly capture on film the essence of The Merchants House, which is its tranquility, it’s chic style, the gentle flow of room to room, the lovely airy spaces, oh so comfortable furniture, the colours fresh and sweet, reminiscent of English country meadows. I can’t begin to tell you about our first view of the interior, the exterior having captivated us from the start. You walk in to a large spacious glorious space, the entrance hall, which flows seamlessly into two of the bedrooms and main living area with the view of the garden beyond feeling as tho you’ve walked into the garden itself...oh clever owners opening up the entire wall twixt out and in with sliding glass doors, a view you never tire of. And there to delight the eyes and senses even further and beyond the walled garden, the spire to the mosque set against the dramatic backdrop of the Bendedactylos mountain range framed by the swaying fronds of palm trees....the kitchen and bedrooms are practical and lovely and cleverly designed.
The garden is a paradise, with so many hidden corners and places to sit and chill. The pool is a perfect size and well maintained evident by its sparkling blueness.
The whole place is so clean it’s the first house we’ve ever holiday stayed at that we would be delighted to move in to and not change a thing. As for the owners they are the ultimate in hospitality and have designed their house to reflect that generousity in their care and consideration of every aspect and detail.
I’m reluctant to post this because I know The Merchants House will be very popular and we won’t be able to find a room for ourselves but it deserves high praise. We’ll be back without a shadow of a doubt when they can fit us in!
Nel cuore degli antichi quartieri turchi.
Molti per vedere e fare tutto a pochi minuti a piedi in una posizione tranquilla
