We had a great time at the cottage! The place was very clean and in a great location! Super close to the entrance of the Porcupine Mountains and the yard at the house is great for hanging out at the house also! Great sunset views down by the lakeshore!
Great location on the shores of Lake Superior near The Porkies.
We enjoyed the home on Lake Superior very much. It had just the right amount of room for our group of 4 couples. We came to snowmobile for 3 days and the trails were in excellent condition after the bitter cold of last week. We were able to access Lake Gogebic, the Ontonagon area into Twin Lakes and the Bruce Crossing, Agate Falls trail. The house was well stocked with towels and kitchen items. We were able to put our heavy clothing on hooks in the laundry room where the furnace warmed them nicely for the next day. They could use better hangars in the entryway closet. Each couple had a nice bedroom and two bathrooms which were very clean. The drawback for our group was the parking space for our trailers and equipment. There was no way our long 22 foot trailer behind our Silverado was going to make it into the driveway along with the other three trailers and vehicles. One couple had a shorter trailer and was able to drive in forward and then disconnect the trailer, positioning it by hand and then we unloaded the other trailers along the road and toted our "stuff" to the house. Dorina was able to provide parking for us at another property not in use about 3 miles away. So, we made it work and had all 8 sleds, one trailer and two of the trucks parked at the house. Unfortunately, this might not work the next time and so we regret not being able to return, as the parking situation is difficult. You cannot pull a snowmobile trailer into the house and turn around. Nor can you back a snowmobile trailer down the driveway because it is too narrow. If you have a small trailer it could work.
A clean and nicely furnished cabin in a GREAT location - that welcomes our dogs!
We typically rent homes or cabins when we travel because we travel with our dogs, so we've experienced a lot of rentals.
We have chosen to stay at the Cottage Up North now for several fall trips to hike in the Porkies with our dogs. The place is bigger than we need for two people and two dogs, but the price is right and the location -- minutes away from the park -- cannot be beat! You can spend more time hiking the trails and less time driving, which is a big plus.
The kitchen is well equipped and squared away. We typically travel with some kitchen items of our own that we use a lot and do not expect to find at most rentals -- e.g., garlic press, flexible cutting boards, our own sharp knives, Aero-press coffee maker, and so on. But this cottage has all the utensils and kitchen gear most folks are likely to need, including of course a coffee maker and a good assortment of pots and pans. We especially appreciate the big refrigerator and the excellent stove/oven and the dishwasher. We do all our own cooking, so it is a plus that there's a nice big grocery store less than 20 minutes down the road in Ontonogan.
The large rear porch with a railing (looking toward the north) is a great place to have our morning coffee or our evening sundowner. The dogs can sit out there with us and enjoy being outdoors without having to be tied up. Sometimes we walk down to the beach and sit -- it can be chilly in the fall, but the view of Lake Superior and the view of the park to the west from the cottage's rocky beach is really beautiful. Bring your camera to the beach, because you'll want sunset pictures.
The main bathroom on the ground floor is big and has a good hot shower and a nice deep tub. There are plenty of towels. There's another bathroom and bedroom in the finished basement -- we have not really used the finished basement, however.
I should mention that we use the wood burning fireplace a lot when we visit. It's one of those iron ones with a door, so it gives a good amount of warmth.
There is a caretaker close by who will come and help if needed -- we had the water heater pilot light go out one time, and I didn't feel comfortable relighting it myself, but he came right away and took care of it. Really nice folks, by the way (and good with dogs).
Judging from our experience with dog-friendly rentals near hiking destinations, we give the Cottage Up North an "A". It is a clean, well-equipped, and well-managed. Have fun!
MICE IN HOUSE
This place was absolutely terrible! The main reason was mice! They don't even mention it in the description!(obvisoly) my family stayed here over the summer and all the owner did was give us traps they didn't give us our money back or a discount! DONT BE FOOLED LIKE WE WERE!
Why is it that you never mentioned the problem to me while you were there? Or soon there after? Also, what were the exact dates you were there? I can't find your name on any of my reservation for last Summer!
