Fijn huis, prachtige omgeving
Herrlich!
Being in paradise!
The situation of the farmhouse is great. The surroundings (orchard, terraces, the river, birds etc.:fantastic.
The house is spacious and shows a fine taste. Lots of interesting books and magazines. Great literature (I read some essays on literature of a compilation published by Coetzee) and magazines on nature, ecology and arts. Equipment complete. Everyting breathes a spirit of nobility. For us it was very valuable being aware of the natural resources and our duty to deal with them carefully.
I suppose we would had gone along very well with our host, Guy. I lament not having met him personally.
A wonderful house among old olive trees
This carefully restored old farm house is a wonderful place to spend yuor holidays in Extremadura, especially If yuo are interested in nature and environmental issues. We were five birdwatchers who had this place as a base for a week, and we enjoyed every day, in spite of the surprisingly cold april.
Fabulous birdwatching trip to Extremadura
We've just got back home after 10 days at this lovely house as a base for birdwatching in the area. I don't think the interior photos really do the house justice - they perhaps make it look more "basic" than it really is.
The location is quiet and private - perfect if that's what you're looking for (which we were), not so perfect if you want to stroll down the road to a cafe. The track to the house is (as others have said) a bit of a challenge. Guy's instructions are very, very clear, so you won't get lost, although I am fairly sure you would not want to arrive for the first time in the dark. While you certainly could drive down the track in a normal car, we were very glad of having our hire car upgraded to an SUV at Madrid airport.
The garden is a delight - azure-winged magpies were flitting around all the time, the constant sound of cuckoos (although we didn't see one), and we saw & heard hoopoes around the garden and along the track to the road. In late afternoon the crickets (and on some evenings, frogs, I think) start up and make the most fabulous sound well into the night.
If I had one whinge it would be that the house felt a bit too "lived in". I've never used OwnersDirect before, so maybe this is par for the course, but the wardrobes and kitchen cupboards left little room for our own clothes and food. If you like staying in houses that feel that the owners have just gone out for the day, I suppose that's perfect, but I'd've liked just a little bit more "distance". If anyone reading this thinks that this is a bit unreasonable of me, please feel free to mentally adjust the review to 5 stars!
Top tip - don't arrive in Cuacos de Yuste expecting to stock up on food there - the shops are very small. Take the time to find the Dia supermarket in Jaraiz and stop there on the way. The main route from Madrid doesn't go directly past the supermarket (so we missed it), but it's only 1km out of your way.
