Great Cabin on the North Shore
Enjoyed our stay at the Lakeview Cottage on the North Shore for our annual fall trip with friends. Fireplace was awesome for an evening glass of wine and good book. Loved the deck for morning coffee to watch the many blue jays, red squirrels and other wildlife. The kitchen was well appointed with everything you need to cook meals. Great shower and appreciated the extra's - body lotion, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner. Place was spotless with comfy beds, sheets and pillows. We'll definitely stay here again next year. Many thanks!
Nice But Mice
This property consists of three cottages that probably date from the 1940's or earlier. This gives them a nice rustic feel but also comes with other problems. Apparently mice infestation is one of them. We did not see any mice but one of our dogs got into a baited plastic mouse trap the first night and was working on chewing through it, which would have poisoned him had we not caught it in time. We then went on a search and found 4 other traps hidden in various hard to find recesses all of which would have been accessible to a small dog. Thinking we got them all we we found him going after another that we had missed the following day. Then, as we were preparing to leave and the weather had warmed up, we noticed a strong scent of decaying flesh in the kitchen cabinet areas, most likely a mouse that had consumed the poison at some unknown date in the recent past. We did not investigate further.
The cabins do not have access to Lake Superior as they are on the opposite side of a dirt road with other properties located directly on the lake so there is no opportunity to go down to overlook the lake but you can hear it a bit from the cabins..
Also the cabins did not have proper draperies, the ones used being see through so there was no privacy at night. Given that we had the middle cabin, renters in the other two cabins would parade around in front of it when walking their dogs.
Other than that we did like the rusticity of the place and it was convenient to other locations on the North Shore. The kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, very nice moose themed plates, and various herbs, salts and peppers. The refrigerator was full sized with two ice cube trays and there was dry wood and kindly in the wood box for the fireplace (which showed signs of having had a fire escape at some point in the past). The gas stove does not seem to have much of a low setting so you have to be careful not to burn your food when using it.
Although the owner supposedly runs the nearby art gallery, she was never there during our stay and the employee who works there denied any responsibility for the cabins. We were told the that owner is a nearby real estate agent.
Overall I would recommend it but the owner should devise a safer way to deal with the rodent problem that does not pose a hazard to pets since pets are allowed, and which does not create a health issue when poisoned mice crawl into the walls or cupboards to die.
We totally enjoyed our time at Lakeview cottage!
Cozy, quiet central location for the North Shore
We enjoyed our stay and it was a great location. Only 10 minute drive to Grand Marais, and only a one hour drive to Grand Portage. If you're looking for a quiet, cozy-rustic cabin this is a very good choice. Very clean inside, nice shower/bathroom and all the appliances you'd need. Board games and puzzels as well for late night games. Linda was very helpful and easy to communicate with, and even had the fireplace pre-set up for us to start a fire upon arrival. Since it was mid-August we made campfire outside instead. Overall I would rate this 4.5 as we 'Really Liked' our stay (system only allows full stars so I marked 4 stars). Would have given it 5 stars but it was hard for us to get comfortable in the smaller beds (we have a king at home; so it's hard to go down a size).
Thanks for staying. The bedrooms only allow enough room for full size beds. I wish we could offer larger ones but we just can't.
Great spot on the North Shore!
My sister and I rented the LakeView cabin mid-August 2018. It was wonderful to stay in our own cabin and not crowded into a hotel. We were about 7 miles south of Grand Marais and about the same but north from Lutsen Resort. We enjoyed our time there. The cabin is cozy and we enjoyed the kitchen amenities for making our own meals and coffee. We spent some time ¨touring¨ even though we know and love the area. Don´t miss out on the World´s Best Donuts in Grand Marais--but get there early for more choices. We caught a National Park presentation on ¨Voyageurs¨ at Lutsen Resort and the next day drove up to Grand Portage to see the Fort and historical information. The cabin was great--we really recommend it if you want more quiet for yourself. Although the cabin is not ¨on the lake¨ -- there are many ways and places to get to Lake Superior and catch her views and beaches. We would love to come again next summer!
Quiet and Relaxing
Linda was very easy to work with when we had to adjust our stay. The cabin really does have everything you need, we were pleasantly surprised. We even baked a bday cake. Weather was beautiful and warm so a fire indoors wasn't needed. There's a communal firepit on the shared property for all visitors to use, so other visitors were surprised when we stoked up the pit. It's so close to grand marais if you wish to drive 10 minutes or so...was also fantastic being able to have our dog with too! Will definitely return!!
