Questa è un'incantevole casa a due piani di fronte alla Chiesa congregazionalista del 1835 nella storica Inghilterra del Sud e alle colline circostanti ai confini della contea di Litchfield. E 'un facile 75 minuti da New York in auto e 2 ore in autobus.

La carrozza a due piani fu costruita nel 1795 come parte della casa principale. Historic South Britain

Charming and comfortable, lots of living space on beautiful grounds in picturesque small village. Collected objects of international art and crafts added to the enjoyment. Quiet and private with good internet connection and great suggestions for local food and necessities. Interesting and gracious host Jay was a trove of stories and information- but never intrusive.

Historic home

Impressive to be able to stay in such a historic structure. Was perfect for our needs in nearby Southbury. From the dining room the large piece of land offered soothing views onto a lush open field and beyond to thick woods. Loved having the host live so handy next door on the same property.

False Advertising

The house is only a 2 bedroom 1 bath NOT a 3 bedroom. Luckily my future son-in-law was willing to sleep on the couch. It says it sleeps 8 people. I only had four adults and they charged me an EXTRA $150 for my "EXTRA" 2 people for 2 nights. None of that was stated before I made the registration and paid. The house is in a good location for hiking and checking out small towns IF they have a true and accurate description and tell you if they are going to charge you extra for any number over 2 occupants. Not happy at the additional charges and lack of bedrooms - I believe I should get a refund.

Lovely property - check-in was awkward

The host was surprised by our pending arrival even though we were booked months in advance and paid in full a month month before. Seems he had not checked the VRBO app in a while. I had not received check-in instructions so a couple days before, after messaging through the app, a text and finally a phone call , I got a hold of Jay who asked "did you just book it?" but he was very apologetic when I explained we booked well in advance. We arrived 30 minutes after check-in at 3:30 and dropped off groceries but decided to give them more time to clean the property and my family home was only 10 minutes away. When we came back things were all set. The only other communication with the host was he requested us to turn off the bathroom light at night as "electricity is expensive in CT." It was merely a night light so I unplugged it that night. We only slept there as we were out most of the day at weddings and reunions, and did not have a chance to enjoy the yard. We left the place clean and tidy, but it could use a good vacuuming and dusting upstairs. Pros - lovely location, great yard, quiet, full kitchen with supplies, dishwasher, coffee options. The carriage house is cozy. Cons - only AC in one bedroom and we used both rooms, it was quite hot upstairs a couple of days. The shower is very small and you need to turn off the water to lather as there is a glass shelf in an awkward location. Overall, a lovely property near the Audubon trails.

Host: jay carow

Jay Carow is an architect who specializes in design of public buildings and historic building restorations and adaptive reuse - skills he used on his 1795 Main House and Carriage House.

He lived and taught architecture at universities in the US, Malaysia and Iraq and has been a principal of the firm of Carow Architects since 1976in Chicago for forty years. He moved his practice to Connecticut in 2010 and continues to design projects of interest.

He is an avid chess player and hiker on the many nearby trails. He has a two-person inflatable raft for use on nearby ponds and rivers and a fire circle where he often has blazes of six-foot high pyramids made of logs,. Both are available to guests for a fee.

If you like history you will enjoy viewing South Britain's 22 homes dating from 1690 to 1880, two churches, and two of the firsts for Southbury, the 1873 Town Hall now a museum and the 1904 Public Library now used to house South Britain's archives and reference materials. There's also the last remaining factory of the 22 that were the gun and trap making center for Connecticut just before and after 1800.

Their is a partially unpaved road that leads from the 1904 library to Southbury's Town Center. This is an alternate route to using South Britain Road. The road wanders for two miles over hills and across farm lands and through woods on the way to the center of this town of 22,000 residents. The road is used as much by joggers, walkers, bikers and pet exercisers than cars.

The location is 65 miles from Manhattan, about 90 minues by car and 140 minutes by bus. It's 15 mnutes by car from both Danbury and Waterbury. Nearby Woodbury, founded in 1680, has the area's first houses open for viewing and many antique shops at the beginning of Connecticut's Antiques Road..

The two acres of landscape, gardens, orchard and woods have been used for weddings, family gatherings, and memoriams,. The lawns are not covered in VRBO rentals and therefore guests and Mr. Carow sign a separate agreement for use of the lawns. A charge of $10 per person attending is usual, but also negotiable.
