A lovely house, garden and welcoming hosts
We had a lovely time here. We had 4 adults and 3 children in our party and there was plenty of space. The garden is very private and the swimming pool just right for small children (our eldest was 8). There was a double room with a cot, a triple room (or twin - 1 bed was more temporary) and another double downstairs. I think one more bedroom was on the horizon as well. The kitchen, bathrooms and living area are all perfect. The kitchen was stocked with all the basics and the living area even had a box of toys. The only slight negative was the staircase is solid stone so potentially dangerous for our youngest child. There's a small patio area out the back where we had breakfast and a large table in the front garden where we had dinner. The owners live next door. We saw them daily, but it never felt like they were intruding - it is very private. The owners have a dog and a cat - both very friendly (our children played with both), but the dog is out and about during the day - it wasn't a problem, but I suppose it could be if you really didn't like dogs. The location is semi-rural - in a sort of village/suburb of Lucca called Pieve San Paolo. The centre of the village is lovely: very small, but there is a restaurant (pizza), bakers, general store, church and bar; it is only a 5 minute walk to the village centre from the house. We didn't have a car, so relied on the bus service into Lucca. The bus journey from Pieve San Paolo to Lucca takes about 15 minutes, but the buses are quite irregular - there are times when you get 2-3 an hour, then none for a couple of hours. Transport-wise, this was the biggest problem - if you wanted to go on a day trip from Lucca, we had to catch a bus from Pieve San Paolo around 8:30am. Lucca is very well connected with frequent trains to Pisa (30 minutes) and Florence (1 hr 30 minutes). We flew to Pisa and got a taxi from the airport to the house - it took about 45 minutes and cost 70 Euros which was well worth it (we repeated the taxi journey upon our return). The host (Grietje) was also perfect - she communicated well with us beforehand, arranged the taxi from the airport, even offered to go shopping for us if we gave her a list. She is very helpful, happy to talk, but not intrusive. There was good WiFi at the house, too. Overall, I would thoroughly recommend it. The 3 things I enjoyed the most were the garden/pool for the children; the lovely old-style converted farmhouse; and the village itself - which is off the beaten track.
