La Bella Vita at La Casa Rossa
We enjoyed an excellent 2-week stay at La Casa Rossa in Todi in early May.
The villa is wonderful: Secluded for plenty of privacy, yet just a 35-minute walk to the center of town or a 5-minute to the nearby village for shopping. It sits on a hill with a fantastic view of the Tiber valley and the surrounding forests and farm fields.
The bedrooms are huge and each features its own large en suite bathroom. Furnishings are "modern minimalist" and complement the contemporary artwork and photographs of Rohn Meyer found in each room (and throughout the house). If you're sharing the house with a group of friends, you can easily escape the hustle and bustle in the kitchen and living rooms and enjoy a nice nap in peace and quiet on the comfortable bed.
The industrial kitchen is every "wanna be" chef's dream. All the appliances (including an induction and a gas stove), pots, pans, and gadgets are there. And there's even enough china and silverware to serve a multiple-course meal to a full house of 12!
You'll spend hours in the dining room enjoying the Italian food you prepare (or have someone cook for you), enjoying the large fireplace nearby, or the panorama window looking out over the valley. And when the weather is right, take your meal outside on the patio around the front of the house for a meal "al fresco" as the sun sets in the distance.
While I'm on cooking, be sure to take a cooking class (or two) at Il Ghiottone Umbro just a 10-minute drive away as you enter Todi. Thomas and Lisbeth are great hosts, teachers, and chefs!
And the pool! Early May was cool, but we still swam in the large infinity pool daily and enjoyed sunning and eating there mid-day. It's looks particularly magical at night when it and the house are lit up against a starry sky or full moon.
There's plenty to see and do in Todi and throughout Umbria. Two family members with us ventured into Rome twice, but that involved a 40 minute drive to Orvieto and a hour's train ride into the heart of Rome. My advice: Stick to Umbria and visit the the fascinating hill-top villages and cities (like Perugia, about 35 minutes by car away.)
The staff are all friendly and go out of their way to make sure that you've having a fun, relaxing time. Count on them to point you to the right restaurant (Cavour for pizza), introduce you to to local artists (visit Bibo's Gallery), and sign you up for some fun activities (like the cooking class mentioned earlier).
You won't go wrong by booking La Casa Rossa.
