We made a booking to stay only a week in this beautiful apartment in Puerto Santa Maria intending to then spend our second week's holiday moving around andalucia, within hours of arriving at the apartment in this lovely town we both decided to spend our full holiday there.

On arrival we were absolutely delighted by the apartment , it is spacious and elegantly proportioned with high beamed ceilings and traditional pattern tiled floors. Although the building itself is is very old it is furnished in an attractive contemporary manner and hung with wonderful artwork made by Luis. We found a well equipped kitchen - a greengrocer downstairs, and some wonderful local shops to buy fine andalucian produce. Each morning we enjoyed eating breakfast, drinking coffee and planning our day's activities on the lovely little balcony overlooking the street in the sunshine.

Conchi and her family were wonderful hosts. While the apartment gave us the feeling we were living in Puerto, not just visitors, Conchi gave us all the inside info about where to visit and when. She and her husband are both archeologists and could give us a great overview of Puerto, Cadiz and Andalucian penninsuala over the several thousand years of its existence!

Puerto is a destination for people who wish to see the fabled 'real Spain'. Keen to avoid the new build white-washed holiday villa experience and found living in Puerto we could quickly start to blend-in. In fact in our whole visit to Puerto we rarely even heard English voices - strange experience! Puerto has many lovely, authentic and very reasonably priced bars and cafe's, serving fine tapas with an emphasis on fresh fish. It also has splendid churches, the most impressive of which is 2mins walk from the apartment, a castle, and the many sherry bodegas. The bodega's are a great place to visit and even better to drink in (ask Conchi which ones!). Puerto also has several fine beaches in walking distance or just a short bus ride away.

Wanting to stretch our horizons a little we had a couple of days out in Cadiz which is bigger, older (although a little busier) than Puerto. Cadiz is a 20 minute boad ride away from Puerto, the ride across the bay in the bright sunshine is a treat in itself! Wanting to go further afield we also took the 1hr train to Seville one day, a great day out - and the train service is to be greatly envied!!

I stayed at La Casa Rosa for approximately six weeks, from the end of February until mid-April, 2013. El Puerto de Santa Maria is a lovely town and this flat is conveniently situated within the city, allowing you to walk with ease to the beach, the train station, the grocery store, and any number of historical sites, bars, cafes or restaurants found here. If you want to practice your Spanish, look no further, as you will encounter only a few people who speak it (save your hosts, who both speak great English). That said, you needn't worry at all about any language barrier, as the locals are friendly and they'll go out of their way to help you. (Also, Germans speakers, take note that the town of Jerez de la Frontera, a simple train ride away, seems to be especially accommodating.)

If you are planning to spend any extended time in the apartment, I offer the following advice and observations:

There is no large cutting knife (the kind used for chopping vegetables, etc.). If you plan on doing any cooking, you should be aware of this. Also, the kitchen does not have an oven (but it does have a microwave, an electric stove top, a dishwasher, and a washing machine).

If you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs. The master bedroom faces the street and the noise from the street (even with the shutters on the windows) can be intense. The building is also old and it is hardly soundproof, so plan on hearing footsteps, crying children, and everyday activities.

Conchi and Luis, your hosts, seem to be willing to do most anything to help you enjoy your time in "El Puerto," so if you need recommendations or any assistance, they really are genuinely kind and helpful people. (One day, Conchi brought me a bag of vegetables from the farmers market just because she thought I'd like them. Before I left, Conchi made me a compilation of Flamenco CDs.) That said, if you need your space, they will respect your privacy. Honestly, it doesn't get much better than that, when renting a flat in a building in which the owners also live.

La casa en si misma es estupenda, igual de fenomenal que en las fotos ; esta muy bien ubicada, y los duenos son muy majos, muy disponibles. No puedo sino recomendar ese lugar , la verdad es que nos encanto en todo.

Nous n'avons passé qu'un semaine à la Casa Rosa mais nous nous y sommes senti bien immédiatement. Avant d'y arriver, d'ailleurs, car ses propriétaires ont répondu à nos nombreuses questions avec précision et nous étions en confiance. L'appartement est absolument magnifique, très bien situé. Nous recommandons cette adresse !!!!

We stayed at Conchi's place for about a week from mid-October and would have no hesitation in booking again.
We are a family of four with two children, aged 14 and 10, and wanted to experience something of the Spanish (Andalusian) way of life combined with some good weather and - especially for the children - to have a beach close by.
For us the apartment was perfect for our needs. It is in the middle of the old town, and you can walk everywhere, which we did every day exploring the town, but always spending some time in the afternoon at the various beaches which are all close by. The weather was perfect - mid to late 20 degrees Celsius.
The Muralla Beach near Port Sherry is picturesque and there are cafes and restaurants along the promenade. Santa Catalina, a bit further up the coast, was more popular with the children because of the bigger waves. It's a long stretch of beach and in October it's wonderfully under-populated. (Chairs and beach umbrella are available in La Casa Rosa).
We had a car though, which is also advisable for the beaches (although there is one closer at hand, a 20 min walk, and there are bus services) and also for visiting the region, but is certainly not vital if you want to stay within the town. There is a good train connection - the station is also a short walking distance to La Casa Rosa. Car parking is a bit of a problem, but if you can't find a space in the road near the apartment, there is usually something free one or two blocks away, plus you can pay for a cheap parking (we never did). The town itself is a maze of narrow streets. Just approach each junction slowly, prepare to give way and try not to drive down one-way streets the wrong way - but the local drivers seem very forgiving when you do.
There's a regular boat service across the bay of Cadiz to Cadiz, which is a must-visit, and, of course, El Puerto is unmistakeably part of the sherry triangle. Bodegas are everywhere; a smell of sherry is in the air.
Life meanwhile goes on in the historic streets of the town. Outside the apartment, deliveries are made, the streets are cleaned, the shops and cafes open, the children go to the nearby school, people meet and talk, somewhere someone is listening to flamenco. You are living that, too, at La Casa Rosa.

The nice people and this lovely apartment offered all to us to feel home and comfortable. Featured with a lot of choiced details, it was clean and well-maintained. Situated in the middle of the centre of Puerto, we had the chance to take part at the spanish life.
Conci and Luis received us with cordiality and a tasteful sherry and gave us a lot of interesting and useful information.

La Casa Rosa si trova nel centro del Puerto di Santa Maria. L'appartamento si trova al primo piano (al secondo abitano i proprietari).
Si tratta di un' appartamento molto particolare nell'arredamento e nella distribuzione degli spazi. Molto interessante e tipico andaluso.
La camera da letto affaccia sulla strada ed ha due finestre (che si vedono nella foto). Molto luminosa.
Abbiamo trascorso una piacevole settimana nella Casa Rosa e la raccomandiamo senz'altro.

The apartment is very charming, with beautiful decoration.
We had a warm welcome from Conchi and Luis, who gave us advices for beaches, bars and restaurants in the area ("El Arriate" at Las Moros is highly recommanded : we loved it !!!).
The apartment is very well located, near the center (shops, bars, restaurants, tapas, etc).
We had a vert pleasant stay !

We stayed at La Casa Rosa for one week in July and we really had a wonderful holiday there. The apartment is very spacious, with high ceilings and tiled floors, and it's very charmingly and lovingly furnished.
Conchi and Luis were wonderful, warm hosts and gave us the feeling that we were family friends, not just visitors (and our son had a great time with their two lovely sons). They also provided a lot of material on the area and gave us great recommendations for beaches, bars and restaurants in the area (do check out "El Arriate" at Las Moros 4 while you are there!).
The apartment is very well located. There's a fruit shop next door and the center with all its sights, shops and bars ist just a few minutes away, as are the bus stations for trips to the beach and the ferry station for visits to Cádiz.
El Puerto de Santa Maria is a very relaxed little town and the ideal base to explore the bay of Cádiz.
